April 28th, 2025 – Nell Thomas, the Liberal candidate in Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes, has issued a halting apology after her bizarre and inflammatory past comments about the elderly and motherhood exploded online – comments she now claims were “taken out of context.”
Thomas, a family physician, posted a video Saturday attempting to contain the backlash, blaming “negative messages” on social media for circulating her past statements. “However, I recognize that, regardless of context, some of my words may have hurt people and for that I am truly sorry,” she said.
Despite the apology, Thomas’ campaign refused to clarify which remarks she was referring to, nor did they specify which were supposedly misinterpreted. Her X account has been deleted, and the National Post has been unable to independently verify the original tweets.
The alleged posts, however, are startling. In one screengrab dated May 11, 2024, Thomas reportedly lamented Canada’s aging population, writing, “stop keeping ancients alive so long.”

In another post dated April 12, 2023, Thomas appeared to rail against motherhood itself, writing: “Imagine my thoughts when assessing a pregnant patient. I telepathically advise the fetus to sue the owner of the uterus while exiting it to this world. Of necessity, a mother must be a climate change denier.”

Thomas did not directly address these posts in her apology video but doubled down on her own self-assessment, insisting she is a “person of strong morality.”
“I am a physician who cares for patients of all ages across every stage of life including end-of-life journeys,” she said. “I help people find dignity, relieve suffering, and seeking peace when existence becomes too heavy to bear.”

Thomas also described herself as a “lifelong environmentalist,” claiming that “there is nothing more meaningful to me than caring for moms and their babies,” despite the cynical tone of her earlier post about pregnancy.
If Thomas showed any real anger in her video, it was reserved for oil and gas companies. She bitterly blamed them for “eco-anxiety” affecting family planning decisions, saying: “If I could, I would take legal action against the oil and gas companies that knew many decades ago, a hundred years ago, the price we would eventually pay for our dependence on fossil fuels.”
“It is devastating that because of their greed, many people feel forced to wrestle with difficult questions about the future, including whether or not to have children, whether to bring children into a world facing such challenges,” Thomas said.
Other alleged posts suggest Thomas’ radical views are not limited to aging and motherhood. She reportedly called agriculture “a thing of the past,” advocated eliminating meat from diets to keep the Earth “habitable,” and even said the human population should be “billions” fewer, encouraging trust in nature to correct the imbalance.

Thomas also allegedly praised China’s political system, writing that “Chinese will rule” and mocked North Americans as “silly twits.”

In a local interview, Thomas admitted she was “Green at heart” and revealed she only recently joined the Liberal Party to support Mark Carney’s potential leadership bid. She said she has previously voted for candidates from every major political party — including incumbent Conservative MP Jamie Schmale.
The fallout leaves the Liberals facing tough questions about how such an unhinged candidate made it onto the ballot — and whether her apology will be enough to extinguish the controversy she has set ablaze.
